n.b. I think this is true of firms and industries in addition to people. Unsolicited life advice: A toxic organization has by definition resisted the efforts of every other person in it to change. You can spend a few years of your life on it. You’ll probably lose. Why not not?https://twitter.com/sehurlburt/status/970182510683480064 …

Yes. It’s known in business that nice people are connected & toxic people are also connected, in perhaps surprisingly separate networks/packs A key mistake I have made in my life is not understanding that all people can change, but that the effort required is not always worth it

It’s the best time in the history of ever to be a technologist. There are many good teams, good orgs, and good bosses out there. If you don’t have one then Beyoncé Option the heck out of your situation. Exit is easier to arrange than voice in our environment. Or own the company.

“Beyoncé Option, Patrick?” I could get another one of you in a minute so don’t you ever ever ever get to thinking you’re irreplaceable.

The exception to the rule is organizations you believe to be important and irreplaceable. I feel for folks who work for governments or churches and genuinely care about the mission. But for-profit software companies? Let capitalism be a garbage collector for you.

I believe it’s about finding the right fit within a company...relatively few companies are intrinsically toxic to all people. Some people excel under stress and pressure, some crack. Some need little guidance to find areas where they can contribute, some need lots of structure.
