It’s sometimes easy to correlate direct hustle on Monday to result on Tuesday, but increasingly over time, the results of the business are harvesting long-term results from seeds planted in seasons past or using systems which repeatable deliver similar effects.

This sometimes is a bit hard to operationalize because “Never tweet about blueberries.”, “Always tweet about blueberries.”, and “Life is random; tweeting doesn’t matter.” are all simple, parsimonious, and likely wrong, and the correct way forward is complex (“Keep being useful.”)

We all plant trees whose shade we will never know, in soil that we can take no credit for. There’s a less philosophical version of that which applies more directly to typical decision making timelines in business versus careers.

Like I have a quarterly goal, and the quarterly goal is important, but I am not doing my job if somebody who will run a business in 2025 doesn’t read my work this month and say “Yep, I will have what he’s having.”
