Saw a twitter thread about this earlier and darn was it right; wish I could find it. Who would have predicted that Guardians of the Galaxy would be a household name?! As the slightly-less-beloved costars of Marvel's A listers like Thor and Iron Man?!?

With Pixar it's a winking in-joke; with Marvel it is literally the product people are paying for.

Disney in general seems to be owning this game. See also Star Wars. No crossovers yet, but the strategy is the same.

Yep, and they are (belatedly, it appears) understanding that they're selling generational products.

I expected it to be films based on fantasy novel series (so, LOTR, Harry Potter, …) but it makes sense that it was comics because there is so much more visual-ready accessible IP.
-
I think it's because comics as an industry successfully parallelized cheap IP creation over a very large team working within a continuity. Fantasy novels typically serialize the production over one author per universe; even transitioning a universe to a new author is rare.

I’m curious how things would’ve worked out if they’d had the rights to the better known characters in the beginning. Would they ever have taken the risk on Iron Man if they’d had X-Men and Spider-Man available?

Definitely agree decreasing CGI costs are a factor.

It made sense to me as a continuation of what becomes possible with easily viewing entertainment through streaming services or pirating, the same force that helped with non-episodic dramatic storytelling for TV

TV became more like movies and movies more like TV. The question for me is not if but when or who will successfully pull off a Marvel with a video game film/tv series.
