We used to chuckle when some BSD-wannabe trader would blow himself up trading short vol. It's a bank, banks can take large losses on occasion.

The real story here is the regulatory oversight (or malignancy?) that allowed these products to leak out to the general populace. I thought I was pretty keyed in, but when I found out /r/tradexiv exists all I could say was WTF?
