I hum a few variations on this theme a lot: Ask yourself "Who do you want to spend the next 10 years serving?" I find that that way of asking is more clarifying than asking about e.g. what market should I enter, what company should I work for, what role should I apply to, etc.

Apart from the business we were trying to get into with my last startup being built on wrong assumptions, we really didn't like the business either. I'm not happy it failed, but not sure I'd have been happy if it had succeeded either.
