I hum a few variations on this theme a lot: Ask yourself "Who do you want to spend the next 10 years serving?" I find that that way of asking is more clarifying than asking about e.g. what market should I enter, what company should I work for, what role should I apply to, etc.

I said, pretty close to the exact wording, "Oh of course not but it's a great business." If the words "Do you want to work for X?" cause you to snap think "OH OF COURSE NOT" then maaaaaaybe be smarter than me.

10 years isn't an accident because it's a *long* time (doing almost anything worth doing is going to require you to cash in some of your limited supply of year tickets) but it isn't *a lifelong commitment.* (Think *much* more carefully about those than you would about career.)
