... it turns out that all the years of reading about dragons and political intrigues in worlds where bat guano reliably turns into fireballs makes me very, very much want to read about the Director of Security backstabbing Operations to curry favor with the CEO.

(It's a fable because it tries to teach you about modern management techniques in software. If you know what WIP stands for, you will find the insights fairly pedestrian... but you've never heard them in the context of a botched upgrade keeping POV character from dinner right.)

There's a category of similar books. They're sometimes called 'business novels'. Goldratt wrote a few about process optimization. His The Goal is the archetype. Lencioni wrote about leadership and teams, 5 Dysfunctions of a Team is quite famous. They're great to quickly learn.

The Phoenix Project is pretty much a rewrite of the Goal for the IT industry. I enjoyed the Goal more, perhaps because it hit less closer to home!

I've enjoyed reading it too. It reminded me of Pascal Zachary's Showstopper, which tells the story of creating Windows NT — something I've read in my youth :)

Yep, I've had the same experience, right until the end. It's basically project management advice packed very cleverly into compelling fiction. The style is very reminiscent of /r/talesfromtechsupport, but with more educational content :)

Seriously that is the best book I’ve read in years. I started it one Thursday after work, stayed up all night reading it and went to work the next day on no sleep. It’s that good.

I really enjoyed reading that one. They talk about 'The Goal' in that book and it is also a good read.
