"Sell me on the desirability of taking a job with you" is almost always a better place for a candidate to be than "Let me sell you on the desirability of employing me." (n.b. There is a point at which interviews also transition to this!)

I’ve heard this before, and it kind of makes sense but I wouldn’t know how to do it. Do you just pick someone and cold email them?

I am frustrated when people who want money ask for advice, or vice versa. I'm happy to provide both, but will prepare for a meeting according to what a person is explicitly asking for. It's a waste of time for both people if the meeting is set up under false pretenses.
