Citizenship is not in the cards unless there is a change in the law. At present, Japan would require that I surrender my US citizenship to pursue Japanese citizenship; I have no intention of doing that.

Ah, doesn't the US have a "you can surrender your citizenship and then get it back the next day" provision? IIRC the UK and Canada both do that for people who want citizenship in anti-dual-nationality countries.
