besides not having to fill out forms, what's the benefit? i've been here 13 years (eijuken) and can't really see any upside to permanent residence.
-
永住権 is permanent residence. It's considered a bar for "approximately as socially established as a Japanese person", which is important in my life for things like "qualifying for mortgages" and "streamline the conversation about enrolling kids in (some) schools."

Do you have to wait another 15 years to get citizenship?
-
Citizenship is not in the cards unless there is a change in the law. At present, Japan would require that I surrender my US citizenship to pursue Japanese citizenship; I have no intention of doing that.

How can a US citizen make the transition to Japan? Specifically, how do you go about long-term stay to immerse in the culture?
-
I don't know if that question can be usefully answered, particularly not in a tweet, since it rounds to "How does one live?"
