This has seemed like the most promising application of the blockchain so far -- bringing legal certainty to places that don't have it [Though, any international payment processor will do!] https://www.wsj.com/articles/how-blockchain-can-end-poverty-1516925459 …pic.twitter.com/WKjROdOD2e

Why haven't any of the international payment processors already tackled this if it's such a large opportunity? Not profitable enough?

I love Stripe Atlas! @spakhm @patio11 I'm curious how Stripe navigates the limited legal infrastructure of developing nations

That's a tough question and it gets nuanced. Can I describe an analogous situation in my own life? I've lived in Japan since 2004. There are features about the Japanese system and financial rails which are not maximally convenient for me, as an American.

On is that the primary language of the Japanese legal and financial system is Japanese, which I am less competent in than I am in English, and which was *particularly* true regarding e.g. accounting jargon 10 years ago. Another is that, bluntly, system doesn't love foreigners.

So it turns out that an attractive option for me is "Continue to work in Japan, but characterize a portion of the work as a business which is organized in the United States and primarily uses the US legal and financial rails."

This lets me modestly decrease the surface area of my life which runs on Japanese rails (which are generally pretty good!), in favor of the US. I still am obligated to do e.g. tax compliance, etc, here, but this historically saved me 90% of the worries I'd have.

Japan is a first world country with pretty good domestic legal and financial rails, but you can see the analogy to a country which doesn't have great rails, right. They should build great rails; everyone should have them. But given that they might not as of 2018...

... giving residents of those countries the option to similarly open businesses which have native access to known-to-function-well legal and financial rails, and to *radically* decrease the inherent barriers to accessing them, is generally in their interests.
