A really interesting thought, inspired by @levelsio : Advantage in business is measured by the degree of difference between you and your surrounding environment. There’s a chemistry/biological term I’m forgetting for this; osmotic pressure, maybe? Simple heuristic but works.

If you live like how everyone arounds you live and work how everyone arounds you work, then your unique advantage is necessarily going to be tiny over capitalism’s next best option locally.

I sometimes wonder why so many of my business friends are, constitutionally, square pegs in round holes or vice versa. This feels like it fills in some of the gaps there.

Liberal US metropolises are defined by lack of homogeneity in the same sense that the soap aisle is defined by a lack of homogeneity: you can find jugs made in every shape, size, and color, rack upon rack of glorious soap for those times when you need, exactly, soap.

Or in economics, "comparative advantage". We usually talk about it in the context of trade between nations, but it applies just as well in the context of trade between individuals.

In terms of biology, I would say something like “Evolutionary change and adaptation can only happen in the presence of variation. The more homogenous a population, the less adaptation is possible.”

You could look into Boyd's OODA loop. The simple process is commonly discussed, but Boyd himself said it's a more universal strategy for survival. Strong similarities to Effectuation.
