Here's something I don't understand: why isn't there greater overlap between video games and young adult fiction? Especially role-playing games, which are all about half-formed personalities roaming in packs, seeking adventure.

If I wanted to create an AAA game this would be my strategy: - go on fanfiction site, use it to test ideas, become popular AU writer - get YA novel published based on my popularity - get game publishing deal based on my YA novel brand

My understanding: 10k emails is worth a book publishing deal sight unseen; it is not worth an AAA game publishing deal, nor even close to it. The biggest issue is the economics of producing copy #1 of a book (~$5k all in) versus copy #1 of an AAA game (8 to 9 figures).

(I realize that the first sentence there is surprising for many people in the peanut gallery so, to make it explicit, you can absolutely get a publishing deal for *almost literally anything* if you can demonstrate an audience of 10k people passionately like your stuff.)
