In a fascinating mix of tax policy, economics, and could-only-happen-in-Japan, Japan has this system called Furosatou Nouzei ("Paying tax to your hometown") which is beautiful and bonkers at the same time: https://www.furusato-tax.jp/about.html

This immediately got me watery-eyed thinking about how readily I would pay someone a subscription fee to maintain my mother’s gravesite and headstone + add special remembrances on her birthday, Mother’s Day, etc. I can never justify the 8hr drive, which causes me much guilt.pic.twitter.com/gOKtJ6ubSt

I've heard of a few different products in the "death" space (God it sounds so harsh to say that). But I think thats part of the issue is we have such a strong taboo around death that we don't think or talk or innovate around it much.

Lots of people who may want someone's grave to be looked after are themselves elderly and not very mobile. So that's not even cynical.

I would absolutely pay someone once a year to put fresh flowers on my relatives' graves, that's genius.

Sending flowers to a grave is a pretty common service in Europe. But they do not send you a picture or clean the grave
