Competing with google and amazon helps you stay on your toes, I'll say that :). I'd say this is true of any chinese startup competing with valley equivalents.

Also: one doesn’t have to look at China. People around you put in varying hours of work. How well does that correlate with startup success? — I wonder if this is an engineering thing. You are working on a computer, effectiveness is correlated to time spent staring at screen!

I am from New Zealand where the work ethic is too relaxed IMO, though I don't understand how they praise the hard work in china and note sleeping at their desks as evidence. If I fell asleep at my desk, I don't think useful work was being done in the hours before or after the nap
