I think resumes are almost useless as a document but they do seem to serve a social function, in that "Can I get a resume from you?" is a clear but deniable statement: "I consider you in play." and "Oh yes, here is my resume." is "You are correct, I do, in fact, possess intent."

When I was contracting submitting my resume (and no other info) to lots of jobs on job boards was my way of telling recruiters I'm available. By the time they call you they normally don't care about what job you submitted for.

Well said. I stopped applying to jobs via resume because of this very thing. If I want a job, I'll reach out to my network for an intro/referral or email the team directly. N.b. this doesn't work universally for all job types.

Actually most big companies do automated pre-screening/selection based on those CV’s... should probably submit them in JSON
