I think resumes are almost useless as a document but they do seem to serve a social function, in that "Can I get a resume from you?" is a clear but deniable statement: "I consider you in play." and "Oh yes, here is my resume." is "You are correct, I do, in fact, possess intent."

Note that this is a very different social statement than submitting your resume to a website, which rounds to zero until an actual human has an actual conversation with you, which is (regrettably) very much not a guaranteed outcome for every process connected to every website.

So, ummm how does someone initiate with a business and tell them initial details about themselves without a resume?

Find someone who works at the company and send them a cold email with a goal of upgrading that to a Skype conversation or coffee.

Agreed - in the last 20 years (since 1998) every time someone has asked me for a resume, I have received a job offer.

Last year I went into an on-site and one of the interviewers asked for a copy of my resume. I haven’t printed out a copy of my resume in 5 years.

I view resumes like incident reports. You should read them before going into incident review (or a conversation) so you can accelerate the conversation and get to the parts that don't carry meaning on paper.

I mostly agree with the original. Some unfortunate resumes do convey reasons not to hire a person. Conversely I don't know that there exists a resume that seals the deal.

A resume exists to get a job interview. It’s not supposed to seal the deal. But I have t been job hunting in the last 4 years, so things may have changed a lot.

Well put. I like this take on the subject. Hiring practices in general are a bit antiquated and probably could use an overhaul imo.
