Directionally accurate from Bloomberg regarding business etiquette in Japan: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-04-02/how-to-succeed-at-a-job-interview-in-japan … The interesting thing, though, is that as a foreigner, sometimes it is to everyone's advantage for you to act Japanese, but that is not 100% of the time.

Note that some organizations find it useful to have a foreigner around to have someone who can credibly play I Am A Clueless Foreigner on staff in case they need that at meetings. Old day job: "Patrick, you're now in charge of $RELATIONSHIP for a day. Do what needs done."

What do you make of that conformity? Is it just superficial, or does it apply throughout the culture? Maybe I’m uncomfortable only because I’ve never listed the conformist restraints of western culture...
