St. Louis has a "test kitchen" downtown owned by the (well-liked) restauranteur that has 3-6 other successful restaurants. It offers one meal (surprise until you arrive, not before you buy) at a set price each day at lunch. Take-out only. Lots of people love it.

Actually, I just remembered you went to Wash U! Not sure if Bailey's was here when you were around, but it's run by them. (Bailey's Range, Rooster, Bridge Tap House, etc.)

I don't recall eating at any of those, but it was 2000-2004 and my eating out budget would have been denominated in low two figures per semester.
