I sometimes wonder whether companies use “Are you willing to specifically study for our interview?” intentionally as a filter. If you entirely abandon any pretense of selecting for job skill, maybe selecting for hoop-jumping compliance is of non-zero value.

We do that in a way by requiring a well-written cover letter. Resume spammers are filed into the reject pile right away.

We had a “take home test”. One of the data points was simply if they were willing to take the time. We believed the best/most passionate candidates were willing to invest more time in exploring a role with us.

I helped run my high school's Model United Nations conference; in part, helping train the committee chairs. We had a rigorous training program: classes, practice sessions, a "rehearsal" mini-conference, and a test.

The basics of parliamentary procedure you learn by seeing+doing. But there are some obscure bits, and it's embarrassing+disruptive if staff don't know what to do. I'm the kind of nerd that loves knowing the obscure bits, but we had 54 committee staff and not all of them did.

Feedback received "The feedback was that you are an intelligent guy and you could fit in perfectly in our culture and with the team. [...]There's a great book called "Cracking the coding interview" by Gayle Laakmann which they guys felt might be of interest to you."

Hold on. You made quite a jump there. Like most skills (art, public speaking, cooking, etc), reading a book on interviewing doesn’t suddenly make you great at it. It just *improves* you and reduces some of the randomness.

As the author of literally *the* book on coding interview prep, you will never hear me claim that prep with ANY OR ALL resources will grant you whatever job you want. It will help you, but frankly the larger driver is someone’s fundamental skills.
