I know that strictly speaking it is irrational but I wish there was a way to swap airline miles / hotel reward points / etc for shares. I mean if the desire is to make a traveler invested in a relationship, why not make that official.
Seems fairly straightforward; your basis in them is the price at day of grant, same as if someone had gifted you shares. Since receiving $500 in shares the same rebate as $500 in credit to your card or $500 of travel, falls under the same “rebate is not income generally” as usual

Fair enough. Following this rabbit hole for another moment (with airlines or hotels that don’t have pegged value points) this would provide a very “easy” way to value to them. United has an ACV for their miles at 9k:$100, but this would provide a tax for miles winners.

All of this being said I probably still wouldn’t do it because they would most likely make the exchange rate so abysmal. However, if it was fair exchange rate, I could definitely see myself doing in addition to go along with index funds of course.
