For the REAL story, you need to see (or needed to have seen) MikeyD give a talk about it. To give you an idea of how many skeletons are in that particular closet: he would start the talks with "please don't record or blog about this talk so I don't get sued and/or arrested"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Vc8sxhy2I4 … is a pretty good talk by MikeyD, although he's being careful with what he says since it's being recorded.

"Government IT contracts fail all the time . . . '94% of the time our IT procurements fail to achieve what they were meant to do.'" Wow.

I wrote about it a little bit in TSW but not as extensively as I wish I had room for. It’s a crazy story

I heard it was a Newrelic, refactor, repeat kind of effort
-
That's pretty close. More like "Newrelic, herd cats, herd cats, explain what ops *actually* is, herd cats, cajole/beg/threaten, herd cats, refactor, repeat" effort from the MikeyD talks I've heard.

If it doesn't mention the XML database CGI had no idea how to use, it's not the real story. One major innovation was ignoring the normal procurement BS of gov foisting tech choices on contractors.

This talk gets into it a little bit.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BJ_FePLcyw …
