Companies doing any sort of engineering work at material scale have junior, intermediate, and senior engineers working for them, by design, in proportions the company is keenly aware of and (if they're at all sophisticated) with planned training/advancement paths.

observation: On average companies smaller than n ~= 100 (maybe 75) engineers misuse the word senior.

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on what companies below that number think senior means versus what it actually means, as I have no experience working at a company with 4 <= N <= 250 engineers. (I suppose I should collect that merit badge sometime...)

I wouldn’t say anyone has a right “it actually means”, but knowing it means different things to different companies helps with hiring/searching.

I know someone less than 2 years out of a bootcamp with a senior title at a 4 engineer company. I know many someones at AmaAppGooFaceSoft without a senior title who would have one at any smaller company.
