It occurs to me, on reading about fastmail.fm’s issue with someone socially engineering email accounts, that this is a good reason to use Gmail. If you can’t talk to Google, neither can the person attempting to impersonate you.

This is uniquely important regarding email. Virtually any account you control anywhere is vulnerable to a human giving it to an attacker, and CS procedures generally optimize for cost over account security. But: email accounts are the skeleton key to your identity.

Email is also exploitable very quickly by an organized, competent attacker, in ways which are difficult for you to walk back. Account takeovers in many places are less catastrophic. Losing your banking credentials: bad! But, bank processes will limit your exposure.
