Other than "we can help you with this, hire us for your project," what would you suggest for monetising that kind of expertise in an extremely niche subject? (Possibly not enough audience for e.g. a book)

First among all things convert them into an email subscriber and therefore a known identity that defaults to reading your work.

My only issue is figuring out whether that little bit is free because it’s unique or because dozens of PhDs with unlimited resources couldn’t solve the problem..

It’s also possible you’re on the Island of Lost Technologies. That is, if your project is heavily reliant on a poorly supported SDK. Do your research and also ensure you have the will to commit if you do think you’re on to something.

what's a good example for this?

I couldn't figure out if IIS caching and configuration was set right or how to debug. Nobody seems to have a list of high perf IIS configs and mistakes. Gave up but seems like a niche that's free.
