"Where are you based?" is an interesting verbal tic for an industry which is filled with heavily mobile people; I feel like my true answer is "Well I'm *based* on the Internet for professional purposes but *home* is Tokyo, where my family is."

There is a wonderful word in Japanese for comrades: 同窓会, for "association of people who have stared out of the same window." I feel the same degree of camaraderie for folks who stared at the same web pages.

I wish I sounded like less of a crazy cyberpunk for this, but: since intellectual / emotional relationships happen more between minds than between bodies anyhow, virtually knowing someone is as first-class a relationship as e.g. staring out of the same window in different years.

Interestingly, I've heard this from academics referring to fields. "I'm based in algorithms, but I often wander into cryptography, mathematics, and operating systems."

Similarly, I find “so, what do you do?” to be increasingly hard to answer.
