As a judgement-free statement of engineering reality: small businesses are abominably bad at data security and almost all of them benefit from having their data on someone else's computer, monitored by the competent engineering/ops team they can't afford.

A related and radically more controversial statement: AppAmaGooBookSoft is much better at securing your data than you are, dear reader.

"But what about a nation state threat?" Who do you want the subpoena delivered to, your legal team or Google's legal team? Google's legal team is really good and if you use Gmail they're the ones filing all the motions, not you. You should urgently prefer that state of affairs.

"If your adversary is the Mossad, YOU'RE GONNA DIE AND THERE'S NOTHING THAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT" https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2015/08/mickens_on_secu.html … Still a great read I'm reminded of every time Nation State comes up.

Hmm, that kinda presumes that BigCo actually *wants* to protect LittleCo's data from the subopena, which is far from obvious to me: their interests lie more with *seeming* to protect it.

But what if your threats include potential acquirers/customers/suppliers who could gain advantage from access to your internal email (potentially automated/ML analysis). AmaGooSoft might be the adversary rather than nation state.

As an individual the threat may be too much information that can be abused to manipulate you with advertising. If you are worried about nation states then you may be right but for many AmaGooBook is the threat.

Very true. I have had large enough org legal teams (with complex legal issues), but I’ve always known more than them about data/tech law (and sometimes labor law - sigh). Know what your org is building for and don’t waste it!

However, my legal team works for and defends me. Google’s legal team works for and defends Google, and might decide the best way to do that is to throw me under the bus.

that's always been my point of view too. But I'm still freaking out I'll commit an API key in github or define a wrong rule in the ACL system.
