If someone asks about side projects what they're probably seeking is either a) rapport building or b) insight into enthusiasm / ability.

I am very well acquainted with arguments for why asking about side projects disadvantages groups of candidates. The manager clearly isn't.

FWIW, I don’t think the poster intends it as a serious answer. Rather it’s expressing frustration with a culture that accepts this question.
