Though most taxis have in-car navigation, which makes addresses more than useless, traditionally you specify by landmarks.

Also spoiled by cell phones but businesses which did deliveries had wall-sized maps of the entire city hand-annotated with known customers.

GPS is strictly better for everyone but I have to admit I got a kick out of seeing my pizza place add a note to the wall when I moved.
