I think this would either require 3rd party services hitting the Google API or, perhaps interestingly, some sort of browser extension.

That's how it usually works for Google/gmail. (i get a.dialog on phone: did u just login on a new device?

I only have to do it with Google once a month (and use a 2FA token) so I don't mind; it is 3rd party accounts using G Authenticator that irk

Google is rolling this out currently. Sign in on web, get 1-tap push notification on phone, done.

This is definitely a usability improvement (thus a sec improvement IMO), but it still leaves phishing on the table compared to U2F.

My google account now sends me a notification to my phone which I just tap yes or no of it was me. It’s replaced Google Authenticator.
