I think my (true) advice on how to use HR departments would be seen as justifications by the HR department for employee-hostile policies.

The general flavor of that advice is "HR cannot give you anything that you want; it's purpose is only to provide proof of inaction."

You accordingly want to round "a quick informal chat with HR" to "announcing your attention to leave and sue", which it will be read as.

So if you *do* talk to HR, you do it with paper trail in hand, OK with the lose-job outcome, and you're maximizing for EV(settlement).

Which I will acknowledge is a sucky state of affairs to be in, but I do not think I am materially wrong about institutional incentives.
