This can be a tough balancing act, although getting easier now that so much is extensible via API. "Plays with all our tools" powerful thinghttps://twitter.com/copyconstruct/status/895454911197978625 …

As a startup, you're squandering precious eng resources and cycles if you're building instead of buying something not core to your product

Would I ever build a bookkeeping system for a non-finance company again? No. Would I build a CRM? No. Would I build a CMS? ... Can't say no.

(My calculus on CMS is that building v0.1 is ~easy and the marketing gains you get versus generic WordPress can be pretty incredible.)

Some combination of scalable content, integration into your application and other marketing tools (email/etc), won't look like a blog.

Our stock solution here is a rails app that uses @contentful for the CMS interface/backend, with all the marketing magic in Rails.

In my company we built a custom CMS for a client instead of WP. Best decision ever

We had used WP for a previous system for another client, that was a mess

That's because v0.1 isn't a CMS. It's some pages you hand built with content from a table.

And when you're a team of 1-3 you probably don't need a CMS! But once you have marketing and a content marketer it's different.

Ugh. I'd rather customize a Wordpress install and then focus on *anything* else in the marketing stack but a CMS.
