My parents think they basically won this bet and while they're not right they are also not wrong.pic.twitter.com/SEGUPQJwPp

The only time I was in trouble growing up was when, in a bout of youthful enthusiasm for downloading the Warcraft 2 demo, I used dialup.

I do not remember the exact number of hours I used dialup for that purpose, but the monthly bill was $400.

$400 was not a "We're impoverished forever" amount of money but it was a "Alright, what plans do we now have to cut" amount at the time.

My parents were, naturally, very displeased, but dad urged mom to not show her depth of displeasure as vocally as she was thinking to.

Rough sense of it: "You don't know the computers, I don't know the computers, but he knows the computers, and we should encourage him to."

Among contemporaries (CS dept 2000 through 2004 and activities before and after), ~90% cited "desire to make games" as reason to program.

I had a different answer on our university surveys (knew career in games would be terrible) but that was *totally* why I started programming

I went to the library at age seven and asked how to make video games. They gave me a book titled How To Make Video Games.

I then taught myself to program using that book and graph paper, since we did not actually have a computer at the time and wouldn't for ~5yr

I had that one, too! I think one of his books had a build your own 3-D renderer that basically taught me linear algebra.
