It fixed when I force-rebooted, yay, so I'm assuming there is a software-controlled electromagnet or something which locked a switch down.

If you have a new macbook, then the touchpad is software controlled. You can even control the pop in the os settings.

The force touch pads on 2015+ MBPs do that if the system KPs or deadlocks. The tactile response is simulated and indeed software-triggered.

If you have a newer mbp, they aren’t mechanical. They use haptic feedback to simulate the click.
