The feels natural thing is "Comment when I would change something; do not comment if I wouldn't", which results in perceived negativity.

So I try to stay respectful of people's time but pipe up with "Thanks for doing this; I particularly like the X because Y, Z."

Kind of like people inclined to leave bad reviews on yelp,tripadv etc when really unsatisfied (or very,very satisfied) but not when happy

Yes! I do the same, folks always seem to appreciate. On flip side, as open source maintainer def helps maintain motiv more than just bugs
