My mother, who cannot read or speak Japanese, writes letters in it to my mother-in-law, who cannot read English. You'll enjoy her workflow:
-
-
"I'm sure she'd be happy just getting the printed version." "Not the point of the exercise, dear." (Mom used to teach Western calligraphy.)
-
(The output she produces when freehand copying Japanese wouldn't get perfect marks for penmanship but it is comprehensible.)
