Term life is easy to get in Japan if you're going to be here a while; LTD is much harder. I went withhttp://piu.org

I have talked to enough geeks over the years that actuarial realities come into play. Take the two hours to get term life accomplished.

Any order of magnitude idea of disability insurance cost?

Depends on circumstances and career plan. I picked 10 years (at age 30) on theory that finances would be in a good place by age 40.

I can see the argument for disability, but as a geek without dependants, why would I need life insurance?
-
Yep, I usually remember to add the clarification "if anyone depends on you."

There are 2 kinds of disability 1 Unable to work 2 Unable to do *your* job I probably want the 2nd: 1st only pays if you can't work at all
-
The jargon for the second if trying to buy it is "own occupation" and yep anyone in our circles wants that as opposed to "any occupation."

Yes. Great ideas. Term life is no brainer & dead simple. LTD is very hard to get for start up founders in early years -> no history of $$.
