While making this decision, a fox, startled by Link's approach, scampers and the bad guy turns. Business it is.

I think I'm pretty good at Zelda games, but I'm woefully underskilled and Link is underequipped for this fight.

One swing of the bad guy's sword takes 6.5 hearts out of my 7; one swing of my best sword does 2.5% of his health bar.

Things are looking bad for Link, but he has a secret: mushrooms. Lots and lots of mushrooms.

While exploring Hyrule's plains and forests Link has saved more mushrooms than Mario, and before ascending the mountain, he cooked them.

Mushrooms on a stick. Mushrooms in butter. Mushrooms with octopus leg (didn't work so well). Mushrooms, apple, and acorn.

The fight becomes a brutal war of attrition. The bad guy swipes, Link manages a weak riposte, and then eats more mushrooms.

I lose this fight. Over, and over, and over again. But I will not walk down the mountain in defeat.

Zelda needs me and Link has just recovered memories of a childhood friend sharing with him a sacred trust.

Eventually, I get good enough to dodge some of the attacks. Not all of them - mushrooms are still getting eaten by the bucket - but enough.

Link then realizes a second problem: he has insufficient swords. They break in this game, you see, and the monster has a LOT of healthbar.

And so Link finds himself out of mushrooms and out of swords, with one swipe left of his one axe, and the enemy having two swipes left.

The enemy prepares to charge and Link prepares to accept his fate... when he sees, next to him, a tree.
