I have a very nice and very expensive CS degree, put together a reasonable course of study, and learned none of these prior to industry.

So when people say "How can you learn as much in a bootcamp in 12 weeks as one does in a degree?" I wonder why set bar that low.

Every CS student should learn how to *write* a database. Knowing how to *use* databases? Eh, you can pick that up after graduating.

I would not have been able to write a database or a web server, but could have, if my life were on the line, done compiler or CPU.

Which is why I've argued that CS and SW Eng be separate majors in school. Both have uses, but are different!
