As originally conceived, the Internet was a cloud of horrifically underresourced side projects stuck together. Very resilient to losing one.

As it presently exists, there are (in many verticals) a few players which are greatly concentrated. Losing any one hurts the network a lot.

There are physics reasons why that would end very badly, mostly having to do with RF saturation.

RF meshnet is a bad idea for the same reason setting up wifi at a trade show is hard, except way bigger scale.

Yeah always easier to paint a coat of happy on it instead of making massive structural changes to fix problems.
