I've banked at the same place for 12 years, originally because my first Japanese employer had a relationship with them. They're HQed in Gifu

Gifu is Japan's answer to Kansas. They maintain one branch in Tokyo, far from me, mostly to service their megacorp clients.

Their Tokyo branch is painfully quaint ("Come visit Gifu! Home to Japan's history and culture!" signs abound). I've been to it exactly twice

So I was surprised when I walked in today and a teller said "Excuse me, Mr. McKenzie? Great, we've been expecting you."

Apparently the manager of my branch called ahead to tell them that I'd be visiting and to fax (because Japan) supplemental notes.

The gist of the call: "I expect Mr. McKenzie to come into the bank next week and attempt to move money. You will be suspicious. Don't be."

"Mr. McKenzie makes a habit of keeping most of his financial affairs abroad. This is natural given his background and business dealings."

"He has recently moved money into the bank. On previous experience, this usually means he will shortly pay someone in Japan."

My immediate reaction is that it's creepy for a banker to be paying that much personal attention. Why does he need to know this?

Theoretically speaking bankers are legally obligated to pay a degree of attention to customers; my bank takes this to extremes.

There was once a time in the US where banks were literal-and-figurative pillars of the community. Relationships were long & deep.

My Japanese bank never changed from those days, and comes up with insights no US retail banker would have, like "Dating someone?"

I can see "creepy" if one comes from a "I expect you to be an API which moves money around"; I find it rather endearing.
