In some US states you have to take out a newspaper ad when you open a company and in Japan you have to when you close one.

In the US it is (theoretically) because the government was worried that people wouldn't be able to correlate assumed names with scofflaws.

In Japan it is (theoretically) because the government wants people to be able to file bills/claims against the company before it dissolves.
