there are significant differences in base complexity. These can't be ignored and for some it's not just a try harder problem.

yeah, I think sprawling enterprise desktop apps can easily get way more complex than compilers which have one purpose

Can confirm, having used lex&yacc for non compiler things. They aren't hard, most guys just don't reach for them.
