Also: as somebody who grew up in mortal fear of debt, feels like I got over that, and presently is modestly overlevered: debt can be OK.

Part of the reason savings rates are high historically is that, if you depleted them, you literally died in the snow.

This is not to make light of it. I've seen it up close & personal. But, again, death in the snow is not an exaggeration at all times/places.
