Our coworking space comes with coffee but does not come with Kleenex. Two weeks ago, I (among others) had a case of the sniffles.

What everyone does is go down to the local convenience store, buy Kleenex, and put it on their team's table. Nobody uses it because theft.

So I thought "Hmm: I'm in for $2 of Kleenex anyhow and there is 0 possibility I use the whole box." So I bought a box of Kleenex packs.

I used one and put the remaining ~5 on the central coffee table, with a bilingual note saying "Feel free to use this Kleenex."

Every day since then, there has been a box of Kleenex on that table. No note anymore. It's just something that happens.

Somebody thanked management for thoughtfully adding Kleenex and they said, quote, "We didn't. We also didn't specifically permit it. Odd."

This isn't a book on Japanese culture, but "Prepare to ask for forgiveness, not permission; you probably won't need to anyways." useful idea
