I hate no meme so much as "selling shovels", which is a synecdoche for "selling shovels in a gold rush" and universally used as a slur.

Can I observe that people intend to be critical of gold rushes and them being extractive but have instead decided to hate shovels?

A shovel is a quite useful thing. You can plant a field or dig a school's foundation with it. Digging these by hand is objectively worse.

@patio11 I've always seen that as a positive, not a slur. Doesn't everyone want to be selling shovels in a gold rush?

@patio11 Really? Not saying you’re wrong, but I’ve *always* heard that as a positive. As in, the ones selling shovels made all the money!

@patio11 I've never actually heard this used a slur, almost always used as "smart"

@patio11 Huh, I’ve never heard it used as as slur, only a positive statement. That in a gold rush, selling shovels is smarter than panning.

@patio11 I've always interpreted that as a compliment. You have a lower-variance, more capital-efficient, & more sustainable business model.

@patio11 I'm fortunate to have only heard it in a context where it was used as an example of smart business sense :D

@patio11 is it really a slur? I'd love to be selling shovels.
