If offered a job which does not come with a guaranteed paycheck of a white collar employee's salary, ask "Am I a cofounder?"

If you are a co-founder, you should assume that the equity split will be approximately even between co-founders. If not cofounder, NO NO NO.

"We will make it up to you later." They won't, and are either clueless or lying to you. Pass. There are better opportunities out there.

"We'll bring you on as a contractor first at $10/hr then retroactively co-founder you." BS. Pass. There are better opportunities out there.

"We will pay you later." Get a promissory note. "Why you being so difficult?" Because "trust me I'm good for it" is probably not a contract.

"This will be great for your career growth." Getting a job is good for your career growth. You should talk to someone who will offer one.

"It will cause problems with investors to describe you as a co-founder, but you totes are one." I have no freaking words. Pass. Pass. PASS.

"We can't afford to pay you." Silicon Valley has a solution to this. It is "Give me 1/Nth of the company where N is number of founders."

"We're more experienced and connected so we deserve more equity." So experienced and connected that you raised money to pay market salaries?

(continued) "Because if you couldn't raise money or achieve revenue on your experience and connections, then I guess mine are just as good."
