I did my own taxes for 6 years. They were ugly and complicated and I did a very good job for an amateur. My accountants save me *boatloads*.

One of the key things that accountants will do is sanity check books and make sure you're not forgetting to claim expenses against income.

The canonical example: if you subscribe to the Wall Street Journal, and you are in ANY BUSINESS WHATSOEVER, you will be told to deduct it.

@JasonPunyon I know, individually that's pretty trivial, but IMHE they find thousands of dollars per hour spent looking.
