Companies have multiple channels by which candidates are introduced to the company: cold inbound, internal referral, Recruiter A, etc.

If you don't ask candidates to write a for loop, you might hire a senior engineer, with 8+ years experience, who cannot write a for loop.

The name for "prove you can write a for loop" is FizzBuzz; you can Google it. It (and isomorphic tasks) *actually filter folks out.*

@patio11 I prefer "reverse a string". Basic answer is easy, but you get wide range of "right" answers that hints at how good they are. -
