I'm glad YC is starting to publish operational advice like this rather than having it fly by in HN discussions: http://www.themacro.com/articles/2016/01/advice-startups-running-out-of-money/ …

You have one priority above all things in an orderly winddown of your company: do not miss payroll.

There is exactly one financial obligation of a company which has moral significance beyond the transactional significance: it is payroll.

@patio11 Too often I find myself pacing back and forth in the kitchen at 4am, figuring out how I'm going to make it happen this month.

@alinajaf @patio11 Do you have plan for how you'll stop doing that so often? You're not a restaurant. If it comes up too much, wind down.

@alinajaf @patio11 Or scale down, which hurts, but sometimes that's the only way to get to a place where the company is stable.

@grayj_ @patio11 TBH we're in an upswing now. Five active clients (2 retainers + 3 full-time developers at work), so things are better.

@alinajaf @patio11 Yeah. I would seriously hate attempting it without retainers + emergency financial padding + healthy lead pipeline.

@alinajaf @grayj_ Future time traveler: tell 2012 @patio11 -> sometimes revenue does actually decrease in services businesses. Much obliged.

@patio11 @grayj_ main problem after hiring: need to be doing non-billable sales/marketing full-time. Principal utilization drops to 0.
